The BFG

It's disturbing.

I mean, it really gets to me. I guess I shouldn't let it, but it does.

No Talent.

Lamer.

Whore.

That's what they call me.

Just because I use the BFG.

Why?

In the collective minds of my accusers, they consider the BFG to be a coward's weapon. Just fire and things die. You don't even need to see them.

It may have been true in the past with id's other games, where you could fire the BFG and people playing on other servers would die. But really, when was the last time a BFG cleared a room? Probably sometime before the Quake II 3.13 patch, I'm guessing. The BFG has been toned down successively since then. Any time after that you would need to be Quaded or have the Amp, or both.

Which raises an interesting question. Why do people hate the BFG, but can stand for the Quad? As far as over powering goes, the quad beats the BFG any day of the week.

And why don't they complain about Techs? Talk about power. If a team can hold all the techs, their opponents are at a huge disadvantage.

The BFG, if used properly, can overturn a tech imbalance. It's the equalizer for the weaker team. It can make a blowout close.

Am I the only one who sees that?

The same people who complain about the BFG don't complain about the Railgun. In a single shot, the Railgun can do more damage than a BFG. They also don't complain about the Chaingun. Per second, the Chaingun does more damage than any other weapon in the game. Period.

The reason, I think, is that people know that it takes talent to fire one of the above mentioned guns effectively.

And then they see someone use the BFG right. And things die.

And It Looks Easy.

Well, buddys, that's 'cause it's done right.

Look at a juggler. He makes juggling look easy. That's because he practiced for a long time to make it look effortless. After a while, it is easy for him. But that's because he has spent many hours perfecting it.

Just like a good BFG player.

He knows the nuances of his gun. He knows how long it will take to warm up. He knows how fast the Happy Glow Ball travels, so he can time it with your movements. He knows when to hit the trigger so that by the time he's pointing at what he wants to die, it fires.

In short, he knows how to use the thing.

I must confess. I used to hate the BFG too. I used to think, "I'll show them. I'll pick up the BFG and even things out." It never worked. and I hated it more.

Then I started to use it better. And I realized that it's not the instant death machine that it's accused of being. I discovered ways to avoid it. I discovered ways to survive it.

By learning how to use the weapon, I learned it's limitations. To paraphrase a great philosopher, to beat your enemy, you must understand your enemy.

I'm still not perfect. I doubt I ever will be. The BFG still does a number on me.

But so does a rocket to the back.

It's just a weapon.

And to paraphrase a great speaker, wether you like it, or don't like it, you're going to have to learn to love it. Because it is the best thing going, today.

Learn to deal with it.
